Update: Lomakatsi’s Restoration Forestry Projects in 2009
Josephine County
Hope Mountain Stewardship Project
This past fall Lomakatsi ecological workcrews completed 700 acres of forest restoration work on Forest Service lands near the community of Takilma, Oregon as part the Hope Mountain Stewardship Project. Objectives of this project were to promote future old growth characteristics and biological diversity in second growth forests through ecological techniques and practices. In addition to the ecological objectives, the project was focused on building local workforce capacity through training and employment. Lomakatsi trained and employed 30 local residents from the Illinois Valley.
Deer Willy Fuels Reduction Project
Beginning in May 2009, Lomakatsi crews and subcontract partners have implemented hazardous fuels reduction projects and forest restoration activities on 650 acres on BLM lands around the community of Williams as part of Lomakatsi’s South Stew Stewardship Contract. Lomakatsi crews are currently implementing forest restoration on an additional 300 acres near South Marble Gulch in Williams. Activities are focused on roadside fuels treatments and the utilization of small diameter logs. Currently Lomakatsi has over 20 personnel working on this project.
Jackson County
Colestin Oak Habitat Restoration Project
This fall the Lomakatsi workforce completed 85 acres of Oak Habitat Restoration projects on private lands in the Cottonwood Creek Watershed of the Colestin Valley. This project was a partnership between private landowners, US Fish and Wildlife Service and Lomakatsi. Lomakatsi’s Planning and Development staff are currently working to procure more funds with various agencies for future projects focused on restoring these valuable oak habitats.
Indian Memorial Mixed Conifer Restoration Project
In December 2009, Lomakatsi crews completed 15 acres of forest restoration and fuels reduction on private lands at the upper elevations of the Ice House Creek Watershed. Lomakatsi partnered with Oregon Department of Forestry and private landowners.
Klamath County
Beatty Bitterbrush Enhancement Project
In November of 2009, Lomakatsi crews completed 30 acres of habitat restoration near the town of Beatty Oregon. Objectives for this project were to enhance browse for local mule deer populations by pruning old bitterbrush in an effort to create fresh nutritious browse. This project was a partnership with US Fish and Wildlife and private landowners.
